Leonora loves the stranger Don Álvaro. But Leonora's racist family is against this union. Therefore, the lovers want to flee. When they are interrupted by Leonora's father, Álvaro throws away his pistol as an offer of reconciliation. But upon impact, a shot is released, fatally striking Leonora's father. This tragic coincidence creates a maelstrom of hatred and revenge in which Leonora, Álvaro and Leonora's brother Carlo are drawn until the fatal end.
But is this spiral of violence really only driven - as the opera's title suggests - by the power of fate, or wouldn't those involved still have a chance to break this deadly cycle? This is one of the central questions that director Peter Konwitschny will be pondering in his Linz production, which will present Verdi's opulent, expansive work in an extremely condensed version.
