Information
The legend of the “Flying Dutchman” exerts a tremendous fascination on Daland's daughter Senta. She feels destined to redeem this man - who is eternally condemned to cruise the sea in search of true love. When the mysterious captain suddenly walks through the door accompanied by her father, fate takes its course, for Senta had already sworn eternal fidelity to another man.
This opera marks a milestone in Wagner's oeuvre, as it is the last in which structures of the then predominant number opera can still be recognized. After this, the composer would revolutionize the operatic genre with his through-composed music dramas. In this opera, we can already hear the tonal language that would later become the unmistakable characteristic of his works.
After more than a quarter of a century away from the stage in Linz, artistic director Hermann Schneider will stage this work in a visually stunning production.
