Information
Turbulence is the order of the day in this play about the right of the first night, secret and less secret longings and relationships. The whole vocabulary of comedy with clever deceptions, dates, forged letters and the shadows of past passions is mobilised and immerses this day in the breathlessness of madness.
At the centre of Beaumarchais' comedy is the servant couple Figaro and Susanna, who want to marry and successfully defend themselves against their masters - an unheard-of scandal in pre-revolutionary Paris! In their first collaboration, Mozart and Da Ponte reworked the plot for Vienna and created one of the most complete musical comedies in opera history: timeless in its humanity, ingenious, full of surprising twists in the structure of the plot and of an overwhelming musical richness that brings each of the characters to life in their relationship to themselves as well as to the others.
