Information
When Christian warriors set out to free Jerusalem from the power of the Saracens, their plans are thwarted by the enemy King Argante and the sorceress Armida. The crusader Rinaldo is particularly hard hit when his lover Almirena is kidnapped by Armida and the sorceress in the form of Almirena tries to seduce him. Will Rinaldo be able to resist these magical powers?
With Rinaldo, Händel presented himself as an opera composer for the first time in London in 1711. And so he did everything he could to ensnare his audience with his music when he created one of his richest scores here. Jens-Daniel Herzog's production, which has already ensured sold-out theaters in Dortmund, Bonn and Zurich, approaches the old story with a finely ironic wink, without betraying the sincerity of the emotions surrounding Handel's characters to superficial entertainment.
