The Titanic is a myth. On its maiden voyage in 1912, the gigantic passenger ship collided with an iceberg and sank. It was one of the most dramatic accidents in the history of shipping. The musi- cal portrays the moving fates of the people on board with care and attention to detail: A young couple from third class dreams of a new start together in America, in first class an old couple shows themselves as much in love as they were decades ago, and many his- toric figures appear: Captain E. J. Smith, ship owner Bruce Ismay, designer Thomas Andrews, stoker Frederick Barrett, radio operator Ha- rold Bride and first-class passengers Isidor Straus, J. J. Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim. The historical material forms a timeless stage work with impressive ensemble numbers and large-scale orchestrated music.
The Broadway production received five Tony Awards in 1997, including Best Musical. The Landestheater Linz is the first Austrian theatre to present this musical, which requires "titanic" efforts due to its large ensemble, as an indoor production.
